History of Nahargarh Fort

Travellers often ask the guides questions like who built Nahargarh fort, the purpose of building it, etc. And they get very interesting answers.

The word Nahargarh means ‘ abode of tigers.’ A story that revolves around is that this fort is named after the spirit of Nahar Singh Bhomia. When the construction started, workers experienced a strange phenomenon. Every day the previous construction was destroyed. Hence, it was concluded that the place was haunted. Then, Maharaja ordered to build a shrine for the spirit to reside. Therefore, it is said that the fort is named Nahargarh.

But, this could be nothing more than rumours or tactics to attract and amuse travellers. The historical importance of the fort roots in 1734 when the king of Jaipur, Sawai Jai Singh, relocated his newly established capital there from Amber Fort while he was fighting a battle against Marathas.

He set up a riyal treasury in this fort that continued to function until Sawai Mann Singh, the last king of Jaipur. He moved it to his small palace Moti Dungri, in the South of the city, in the year 1940.
